Miles for Smiles

Just Milk is proud to do their small part in supporting the Miles for Smiles initiative.

Every year Miles for Smiles PE to CT arrange a cycle for over 1000km on a bicycle to raise awareness on how important a smile is. On the 28 February 2019 to 10 March 2019, a group of 30 companions took on the tarmack cycling from PE to CT to partake in the Cape Town Cycle tour; smiling, sweating and sharing awareness for over 1000 km, in 10 days, in aid of Operation Smile.

We have adopted the word ‘exercise’ both literally and figuratively, linking both spiritual and the physical exercise. We want to promote health and well-being by setting an example as positive role models and make people aware of the wonderful works of Operation Smile. Sport has been able to drive and inspire people to achieve things they never thought possible. Doing it with a purpose and passion to help others is so much more. We all have responsibility, not only to our immediate families and communities, but as a global community, understanding that together we can make a difference and generate change.

Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate and have twice the odds of dying before their first birthday. Children with cleft conditions who survive may have difficulty eating, speaking, hearing or breathing properly. In some communities they are shunned, rejected and completely ostracised, and in too many cases their parents can’t afford the surgeries they need in order for them to lead a productive life. We were so lucky to have raised funds to help change the lives of almost 20 children with R 100 000 donations in 2018. “The fact that I can plant a seed and it becomes a flower. Share a bit of knowledge and it becomes anothers. Smile at someone and receive a smile in return. These are to me a continual spiritual exercise.” Dr. Leo Buscaglia.
